About

The Friends of Hoar Oak Cottage is a not-for-profit charity started by descendants of three of the shepherd families who once lived and worked at this remote cottage.  The aim of the Friends is to find, research, save and share the history of the cottage and stories of the families who once lived there.  The Friends worked to preserve the cottage in its landscape through cooperation with the owners – the Exmoor National Park Authority – and other interested parties.

The Friends are grateful to the numerous descendants of the shepherd families as well as many others – in Devon and across the world – who have contributed their memories, knowledge, photographs, genealogical researches, documents and artefacts to help build the story of Hoar Oak Cottage and the people who lived there.   The work to help save and share this information began with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund.

The work continues to research and share findings about Hoar Oak Cottage through exhibitions, displays, talks and presentations as well as through social media.   You can follow news and updates on this website, on our blog and also on Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter).   You can arrange to have a talk, display or exhibition for your local club, organisation, library or museum etc. Or if you would just like to know more or, perhaps, have your own stories or photos to share please get in touch.
